Let’s start with some facts, our bodies are made up of approximately 60% water and our brains are 75% water. Keep hydrated, and our brains will function at their best, with better concentration, memory and general awareness. The NHS recommend us to have between 6-8 glasses of water per day, keeping a water bottle on your desk, in the car or in your bag is a great way to encourage you to keep drinking and will make it harder to forget.

If you are planning on traveling and will be getting on a plane, then its extra important to drink water as during a 3-hour + flight, your body can lose up to 1.5 litres of water.

If you enjoy keeping fit and have an active lifestyle, staying hydrated will help you perform better in whatever activity you take part in. 75% of our muscle tissue is water, so keep reaching for that glass if you are out for a PB (Personal Best).

It’s very easy to overindulge, we all do it, but when it comes to losing that weight, water can help us. Keeping hydrated helps to suppress those snack cravings and supports a healthy and regular metabolism.

For some of us who suffer with aches and pains in the joints, drinking plenty of water will help cartilage remain soft and absorb more water. In turn, reducing the amount of discomfort felt and improving mobility.

Our skin is a great indicator of whether it has had enough water or not. It’s the largest organ in the body and the following benefits from drinking more water, should be enough to get you up to the 8 glass-a-day target:

Water helps the skin maintain its moisture levels and this then increases its elasticity. The more elastic your skin, the less wrinkles and fine lines are visible.  Water also helps the body flush out toxins, the less in the system, the clearer the complexion and stronger the blood flow.

Want to get rid of those puffy eyes? Then stop the body retaining that water which causes it by drinking more. When we are dehydrated the body tries to help by storing it, but the body needs more water to help flush it through the system. The more water we drink, the better the body is at removing it. All the unwanted products are eliminated and cannot cause the skin further issues.

If you suffer with open pores and breakouts, make sure you keep up with drinking the water. It will help to regulate the amount of oil produced by the skin and balances out the natural oils and water found on the surface. This can help reduce pore size, decrease acne breakouts, and reduce blemishes.

How do you know when you are dehydrated? It’s important to be aware of the symptoms of dehydration, though it’s better not to get to that point, spotting it early can help the body recover much quicker. The most common symptom are headaches, fatigue, lack of concentration and dizziness. Others include a dry mouth and throat, dry skin and dry cracked lips.

So, make sure to have a glass of water as soon as you wake up and a glass 30 minutes before eating any big meal. Invest in an eco-friendly water bottle; glass and/or bamboo ones are good options, please no plastic! The sooner you get into the habit, the easier it is to drink and if you start to get bored with it, add some flavour. A squeeze of lemon or lime will add a zing while a few fresh raspberries will naturally sweeten it.
