WHAT IS AZULENE?

What is it?

Named after the Spanish word for "blue," azul, it was first isolated in the 15th century from the German chamomile herb. Towards the end of the 19th century, scientists discovered azulene in other plant life, including yarrow and wormwood. Azulene is used in skincare products and some cosmetics as it is regarded as a useful ingredient for its vivid blue colour and healing properties.

Pevonia sources their Azulene from German Chamomile.

How can Azulene help my skin?

Extracted from chamomile, azulene is known to reduce inflammation in the skin tissue. This happens when the immune system releases chemicals to combat infections or to protect the skin from being attacked by foreign molecules. The chemicals which are found in azulene inhibit the actions of the immune system, resulting in a reduction in redness and swelling. These anti-inflammatory properties found in azulene, have led to its inclusion in formulas which treat acne. It will help to alleviate the redness from the blemishes, allowing the complexion to clear up more quickly and will decongest the area. Azulene is also used in skin serums, creams, lotions and moisturisers which have been developed to ease stressed and damaged skin.

Azulene is also an antioxidant. This means it has the ability to shield and protect the skin from damage caused by free radicals. As much as we wish it would, azulene cannot prevent the skin from ageing. It can, however, help to minimise the symptoms associated with mature skin and reduce the likelihood that fine lines and wrinkles will develop prematurely. By neutralising free radicals, azulene can also help prevent the cellular damage that causes skin to discolour sun exposure.

Used in salves and ointments, azulene will help to calm a wide variety of skin conditions and irritations because of its soothing, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. As azulene is a herbal ingredient, many of its properties are thought to be derived from the chamomile plant, through which it is distilled.
