WHAT IS ROSE OIL?

History & Origin

There are over 100 species of Roses, which are woody perennials and form part of the family Rosaceae. The flowers vary in size and shape and come in a range of colours from white, through to yellows and reds.

The majority of the species are native to Asia, with smaller numbers native to Europe, North America, and northwest Africa. The Chinese and the Egyptians are thought to have first cultivated roses, around 5,000 years ago and during the Middle Ages, monks and apothecaries grew roses for their medicinal value. In the late 18th-century, cultivated roses were introduced into Europe from China, a lineage to which most modern-day roses can be traced back.

How can Rose help my skin?

As beautiful as they are in your garden, the extracts from this versatile delicate flower may be used on all skin types, however it is highly effective in products for dry, sensitive, and mature skin. Pevonia uses Rosa Gallica Flower Oil (French Rose); an ultra-pure, top quality essential oil used for its regenerating, calming and antiseptic qualities. French Rose essential oil is considered the most fragrant and effective of all rose oils.

Rose essential oil contains a complex array of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. They are naturally antibacterial as rose essential oil can help treat acne and acne-prone skin. Combined with its cleansing properties, rose makes an ideal ingredient in face washes and cleansers. While we may think of roses for their iconic deep red colour, rose oils can actually help reduce swollen spots as they are an anti-inflammatory. Its calming properties can also help sooth Rosacea and eczema.

Rose contains high amounts of Vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant and is an important vitamin which protects skin cells from damage, especially sun damage. Some evidence even suggests that rose water can help prevent sunburn. The natural oils found in roses, help to lock moisture into the skin, keeping it feeling smooth and hydrated. Rose is especially beneficial for those with sensitive skin, because the sugars in its petals create a soothing feeling. It is also a natural astringent, tightening pores and restoring suppleness for a glowing complexion. Unlike conventional alcohol-based toners, rose leaves skin feeling smooth, not dried out.
