What is it?
Vitamin C is an important vitamin, vital for your overall health but just as important for your skin. Citrus fruit, tomatoes, broccoli and strawberries are good sources of the vitamin and the most important reason why it’s loved by the skin, is due to the fact it helps create collagen, and as we know, this is vital to keep the skin looking plump and youthful. Also an antioxidant, Vitamin C helps to protect us against the free radical damage inflicted on the skin from unprotected UV exposure and pollutants.
Benefits of Vitamin C in Skincare:
Brightening and Reducing Hyperpigmentation:
Vitamin C helps reduce the appearance of dark spots and uneven skin tone by inhibiting melanin production, the pigment responsible for skin colour. It can lighten dark spots caused by sun damage, acne, or inflammation
Antioxidant Protection:
Vitamin C fights free radicals; unstable molecules that can damage skin cells and contribute to ageing, basically - toxins. It protects against environmental stressors like pollution and UV radiation, which can cause premature ageing and damage. It also supports the effectiveness of sunscreen.
Collagen Stimulation:
Vitamin C is essential for collagen synthesis, a protein that provides skin with its structure and elasticity. Increased collagen production helps improve skin firmness, reduce the appearance of wrinkles, and promote overall skin health.
Enhanced Sun Protection:
When used in conjunction with sunscreen, Vitamin C can provide additional protection against sun damage.
Moisture Retention:
Vitamin C can help improve the skin's natural moisture barrier, preventing moisture loss and promoting hydration, keeping the skin looking plump and hydrated.
Wound Healing:
Vitamin C promotes wound healing by supporting collagen production and reducing inflammation.
Redness Reduction:
Vitamin C's anti-inflammatory properties can help reduce redness and irritation in the skin.
May Help with Acne:
Vitamin C's anti-inflammatory properties can help soothe acne breakouts and reduce redness associated with it.
Incorporating Vitamin C into Your Skincare Routine:
Choose the Right Product:
Vitamin C is available in various forms, including cleansers and toners, serums and creams/moisturisers.
Start with a Lower Concentration:
For sensitive skin, it's advisable to start with a lower concentration of Vitamin C and gradually increase it as tolerated.
Consider a Combination:
Vitamin C can be combined with other skincare ingredients, such as hyaluronic acid, for enhanced benefits.
Important Considerations:
Vitamin C can be unstable:
It's important to choose products that are formulated to protect Vitamin C from degradation, such as those with air-tight packaging or those that use stable forms of Vitamin C.
Potential for Irritation:
While generally well-tolerated, some individuals may experience irritation or redness with Vitamin C, especially at higher concentrations.
Not a Cure-All:
Vitamin C is not a substitute for proper sun protection and may not be suitable for all skin types or conditions.
What are the different types of Vitamin C available in Pevonia Products?
Not all types of Vitamin C are created equally! Well-known ascorbic acid is Vitamin C in its raw water-soluble form. Unfortunately, it is very unstable and oxidizes and loses efficacy once exposed to air. While L-ascorbic acid is the form that the skin utilises, its acidic pH causes redness and sensitivity. Pevonia overcomes instability and sensitivity in their natural Vitamin C Serum (C Complexe with Oxyzomes) by using skin-friendly MAP C (Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate) encapsulated in state-of-the-art Oxyzomes, to achieve beautifully glowing results.
Due to their antioxidant free radical and age defense properties, Pevonia also uses Ascorbyl Glucoside, Calcium Ascorbate, THDA (tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate), and Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate forms of Vitamin C in many of their other natural skin care products.
Clinically proven products with safety and efficacy testing performed by the Department of Drug Sciences, University of Pavia, Italy.
Ascorbyl Glucoside
This is a stable yet highly active, water-soluble derivative of vitamin C that's commonly used in skincare for its antioxidant properties and ability to brighten and even out skin tone. It's known for being less irritating than pure ascorbic acid, making it a suitable option for many skin types, including sensitive skin.
Calcium Ascorbate
This buffered, less acidic and stable form of vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is often used in skincare for its antioxidant and collagen-boosting properties. It's known as Ester-C and is considered gentler than some other vitamin C forms, making it suitable for various skin types.
Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate (M.A.P.)
MAP is a stable (water-soluble salt compound) form of Vitamin C that the skin readily absorbs. It's proven effective in reducing fine lines, wrinkles, improving skin tone and texture, and shielding against sun damage. It also stimulates collagen production plus, it's gentle and suitable for all skin types.
Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate / Sodium Ascorbate
Just like pure vitamin C, Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate functions as an antioxidant on and within skin. When used in higher amounts, it can be effective for brightening a dull skin tone, smoothing wrinkles, visibly firming skin, and reducing discolourations. This stablised sodium salt of ascorbic acid is used in cosmetic preparations to regulate pH and illuminate the skin’s surface.
Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate (THD)
THD ascorbate is a stable, oil-soluble form of vitamin C known for its skin benefits. It's considered a more stable and better-absorbed form of vitamin C compared to L-ascorbic acid, which is water-soluble. THD Ascorbate offers several advantages for the skin, including antioxidant protection, collagen stimulation, and improved skin tone and texture.
